Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe)

Day 1 - Day 3

One of the original natural wonders of the world, the Victoria Falls is a World Heritage Site and an extremely popular destination in Africa.

Known locally as ‘The Smoke that Thunders’ this spectacle is accessible from both Zambia and Zimbabwe and it is an ideal place to combine game viewing and water sports on your holiday.

There is excellent fishing, a terrifying bungee jump and arguably the best commercial white water rafting in the world.

Chundu Island is a private island retreat on the Zambezi River, where elephants are often seen wading between the islands, alongside hippo and crocodile in the surrounding channels.

Spacious river-facing chalets, built with natural materials in a fresh, contemporary style, each have a private deck overlooking the river. The central lodge overlooks the Zambezi River, with comfortable lounge and dining areas, a swimming pool and outdoor decks. Freshly prepared meals are served overlooking the river or, weather permitting, under the stars.

Activities here include safari drives, guided bush walks in Zambezi National Park, sunrise and sunset river cruises, canoeing, and cultural visits to nearby villages, while a transfer is provided to and from Victoria Falls town for a day’s excursion.

Chundu is a combination of a tranquil private island with easy access to Victoria Falls.  It’s an excellent base to relax surrounded by water and wildlife, with the option of exploring the busier Victoria Falls area of coffee shops, tours and the Falls on a day trip.

Tours & Experiences

A typical day at Chundu begins with a morning safari drive or guided bush walk in Zambezi National Park, when wildlife is most active and temperatures are cooler. Returning to the lodge, there is time for breakfast overlooking the river, followed by relaxing at the pool or on the private deck, where elephants are often seen wading through the channels.

The afternoon may include a canoe trip or a sunset cruise along the Zambezi River, watching wildlife gather on the banks followed by sundowners and dinner.

For those keen to visit Victoria Falls, transfers are available into town for a day to explore the Falls, local markets, cafés and optional activities, before heading back to the peaceful setting of Chundu Island.

Lake Kariba

Day 4 - Day 6

Lake Kariba stretches for more than 200 kilometres along the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, forming a natural boundary between the two countries. The lake is home to crocodile, hippo, abundant fish and aquatic birdlife, while the shoreline and islands support elephant, buffalo and a variety of other wildlife, particularly along the Matusadona shoreline where animals come down to drink.

Houseboats are the classic way to explore Lake Kariba, with unhurried days relaxing on deck, fishing for tigerfish and bream, or watching elephant and buffalo at the water’s edge, that end with the sun setting over the water. There’s also a good selection of safari camps and quality hotels along the shoreline, that offer game drives, boat safaris and views of the gorgeous sunsets.

Kariba works well as an add-on after a trip to Victoria Falls or a Zimbabwe safari, either as a relaxed few days on a houseboat or staying at a shore-based camp or hotel for the best of both experiences, safari drives and boat rides.
