  • If you're flying Emirates Airlines to Nairobi, you'll need to stay overnight in Nairobi at extra cost before your safari starts the next morning.

Masai Mara

The Masai Mara is Kenya’s most well-known wildlife area, named in honour of the Maasai people, ancestral inhabitants of the area.

 

It’s where you can, nature permitting, see the Big Five. In safari speak, this refers to lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino.

 

Traditionally, between July – October, more than a million zebra, wildebeest and Thomson’s gazelle make their way to the sweet grass of the Masai Mara for grazing. This migratory movement is in turn a drawcard for predators, both at river crossings, and in the plains of the Masai Mara.

 

Game viewing is generally good year round in the Mara, and at it’s best during the migration.

Basecamp Masai Mara is situated in the Naboisho Conservancy on the banks of the Talek River, a natural border to the Masai Mara National Reserve.  Safari drives are done in the Masai Mara National Reserve.

Spacious en-suite walk-in tents, built in dense riverbed foliage, allow for privacy and comfort with a view of the Masai Mara National Reserve. All tents are fitted with bio-flush toilets, solar-heated safari showers, and a private balcony. Central areas include a dining area, and open outdoor boma for sharing stories around a camp fire at night.

Guests become more than visitors, they become part of the Maasai community, join us around the fireplace, for storytelling and stargazing. This camp is our own cradle of mankind, where our journey once began”

Basecamp Masai Mara is a traditional safari camp, well hosted, offering a good combination of wildlife viewing and cultural immersion in the company of local Maasai hosts and guides.

Basecamp Mara is in Naboisho Conservancy, on the Talek River, near the Talek entry gate to the Masai Mara.  During your stay, there are morning and late afternoon safari drives with other guests in open-sided 4x4's in the Masai Mara.

In between safari drives, there's time to relax and enjoy the views across the river,  visit the conservation and community projects supported by Basecamp Mara or visit the tree nursery and organic garden.

Optional extras during your stay, which can be booked and paid for during your stay, are a visit to the local Talek market or cultural village visit.
